Anthony McCall, Solid Light

It can be said that Solid Light is one of the most surprising exhibitions I have seen in London. McCall's work made me realize for the first time that light can appear in a "solid" form. I seemed to really "touch" the light and "enter" the light. This interactive method shocked me and completely refreshed my understanding of light, revealing the infinite possibilities of light.

Solid Light shows McCall's artistic concept that artworks can be not just a static object, but a dynamic and experiential field. This focus on the audience experience has inspired many creative ideas for immersive exhibitions, allowing the works to resonate deeply with the audience's senses and emotions.

In my works, light usually needs to rely on the background to appear, and light and shadow are always synchronized and interdependent. McCall's work inspired me to explore how light can gain self-independence in space while interacting with the audience and breaking the boundaries of light and shadow. Through this exploration, I hope to make light a physical existence in my works and an emotional carrier, guiding the audience into a new experience space.

Ryan Chetty, We are nation of many, emanating from everywhere 2024

Ryan Chetty's work "We are a nation of many, emanating from everywhere" was exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 2024. The work aims to explore the theme of multicultural integration and identity. Chetty created a sculptural installation that symbolizes diversity and inclusiveness by using hollow sculptures and light and shadow effects. The superposition effect of different projections also symbolizes the mutual penetration and influence between cultures. The changes in light and shadow in the work guide the audience to think about the fluidity and diversity of personal identity in the context of globalization. Through this artistic expression, Chetty hopes to inspire the audience to face life positively and embrace the rich experience brought by multiculturalism.

Chetty reflects the integration and tolerance of culture through the combination of different projections, which makes me rethink the symbolic meaning of light and shadow. In my creation, light and shadow are mainly used as a visual means to trigger the audience's thinking and imagination about death. Chetty's work reminds me that different material choices are not only innovative in form, but also can carry rich metaphors behind them. This understanding broadens my interpretation of light and shadow effects and makes me think about how to convey the emotions and thoughts I want to express more effectively through the metaphorical function of the material itself. Chetty's work makes me realize that light and shadow are not only a tool for expressing visual effects, but can also become a symbol of culture and a metaphor for identity. Such a multi-dimensional expression makes me start to think about whether I can further lead my work to the exploration of identity, memory or culture, and deepen the connotation of the work.
